  4.  #1-9 All who have God against them, have the word of God against
  5.  them. Those that have a constant hatred to God and his people,
  6.  as the carnal mind has, can only expect to be made desolate for
  7.  ever.

  10.  #10-15 When we see the vanity of the world in the
  11.  disappointments, losses, and crosses, which others meet with,
  12.  instead of showing ourselves greedy of worldly things, we should
  13.  sit more loose to them. In the multitude of words, not one is
  14.  unknown to God; not the most idle word; and the most daring is
  15.  not above his rebuke. In the destruction of the enemies of the
  16.  church, God designs his own glory; and we may be sure that he
  17.  will not come short of his design. And when the fulness of the
  18.  Jews and Gentiles shall come into the church, all antichristian
  19.  opposers shall be destroyed.

  21.  * The land shall be delivered from heathen oppressors. (1-15)
  22.  The people are reminded of former sins, and promised
  23.  deliverance. (16-24) Also holiness, and gospel blessings.

  26.  #1-15 Those who put contempt and reproach on God's people, will
  27.  have them turned on themselves. God promises favour to his
  28.  Israel. We have no reason to complain, if the more unkind men
  29.  are, the more kind God is. They shall come again to their own
  30.  border. It was a type of the heavenly Canaan, of which all God's
  31.  children are heirs, and into which they all shall be brought
  32.  together. And when God returns in mercy to a people who return
  33.  to him in duty, all their grievances will be set right. The full
  34.  completion of this prophecy must be in some future event.

  37.  #16-24 The restoration of that people, being typical of our
  38.  redemption by Christ, shows that the end aimed at in our
  39.  salvation is the glory of God. The sin of a people defiles their
  40.  land; renders it abominable to God, and uncomfortable to
  41.  themselves. God's holy name is his great name; his holiness is
  42.  his greatness, nor does any thing else make a man truly great.

  45.  #25-38 Water is an emblem of the cleansing our polluted souls
  46.  from sin. But no water can do more than take away the filth of
  47.  the flesh. Water seems in general the sacramental sign of the
  48.  sanctifying influences of the Holy Ghost; yet this is always
  49.  connected with the atoning blood of Christ. When the latter is
  50.  applied by faith to the conscience, to cleanse it from evil
  51.  works, the former is always applied to the powers of the soul,
  52.  to purify it from the pollution of sin. All that have an
  53.  interest in the new covenant, have a new heart and a new spirit,
  54.  in order to their walking in newness of life. God would give a
  55.  heart of flesh, a soft and tender heart, complying with his holy
  56.  will. Renewing grace works as great a change in the soul, as the
  57.  turning a dead stone into living flesh. God will put his Spirit
  58.  within, as a Teacher, Guide, and Sanctifier. The promise of
  59.  God's grace to fit us for our duty, should quicken our constant
  60.  care and endeavour to do our duty. These are promises to be
  61.  pleaded by, and will be fulfilled to, all true believers in
  62.  every age.
